Travel restrictions in some countries continue to negatively impact the entry of foreign tourists visiting Mexico. Between January and October of this year, the country registered a loss of 11,164,538 international travelers compared to the same period a couple of years ago, when the pandemic did not exist. In this regard, Iliana Alcaraz, tourism consultant, pointed out that despite the fact that national destinations managed to implement bio-sanitary protocols to give confidence to international tourists, a tourism promotion platform is needed to consolidate and clearly communicate the destinations' attributes. During 2021, the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, the entry of international tourists to Mexico remained 29 percent below the levels reached in 2019, but with a remarkable recovery of 31 percent with regard to 2020. By the end of 2021, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported the arrival of 31.8 million foreign tourists, a figure 29.2 percent lower than that reported pre-pandemic. "We cannot speak of a consolidation of the recovery of foreign tourism, but rather of a gradual process of efforts and adaptations towards a panorama that will allow us to at least match the levels of 2019″, said Iliana Alcaraz, CEO of the tourism consulting firm Hess & Co.
